Founded in the year 1814, this school belongs to the Christian church and after its takeover, it was converted into a Buddhist school. English medium was first started as a boys school. Students from foreign countries have also studied in this college. Buonavista College, which has given many great intellectuals to the world, was under the threat of collapse, but it was rebuilt under the leadership of Principal Karunaratne Ganewatta.
